About USCareCheck

A free reference that puts the federal government's own records about a US hospital or clinician on one page, in plain language, so that a patient, a family member or an employer can check them before a visit or a hire.

What this is

The United States publishes a great deal about its hospitals and clinicians - star ratings, patient surveys, death and infection rates, what Medicare paid a doctor, what drug companies paid a hospital, who has been barred from federal health programs. It is spread across half a dozen agencies and file formats written for analysts, not patients. USCareCheck collects those records, joins them by the federal identifiers they share (the NPI for people, the CMS certification number for hospitals) and shows them side by side with a short explanation of what each one means and what it does not.

There are no reviews, no rankings of our own, no "best of" lists and no paid placement. Where a page says a hospital is better or worse than the nation, that is CMS's published statistical verdict; where it says a doctor treated 328 Medicare patients, that is CMS's count. We add arrangement and explanation, nothing more.

Who runs it

The site is an independent, privately run project.

It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Department of Health and Human Services, or any hospital, clinic, clinician, insurer or drug company. There is no advertising, no sponsorship and no affiliate link anywhere on the site, and nothing here is for sale. No clinician reviews or edits the pages: they are generated from the federal files described below, and the wording that explains each measure is ours.

Where every number comes from

Six public federal sources, each named on the page that uses it and each linked back to the agency's own record so you can check it there:

  • NPPES (CMS) - the National Provider Identifier registry: 7,415,294 practitioners and 1,959,660 organisations, with their self-declared specialties, licences and addresses.
  • CMS Care Compare - hospital star ratings, the HCAHPS patient survey, and death, complication, infection and readmission measures (retrieved 4 Oct 2026, refreshed weekly).
  • CMS Open Payments - what drug and device makers reported paying teaching hospitals, with a full breakdown for program year 2025.
  • CMS Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners - each provider's Original Medicare Part B patients, services and payments for 2024.
  • HHS-OIG LEIE - the list of individuals and entities excluded from federal health programs (OIG file dated 10 Sep 2026).

The sources and methodology page gives the refresh schedule of each file, the few figures we derive ourselves (sums and medians, described there) and the known limits of each dataset.

What it deliberately does not do

  • It does not give medical advice and it does not rate the quality of any individual clinician. A hospital's star rating is hospital-wide; a doctor's Medicare volume says nothing about how good their care is. Talk to a clinician about your own situation.
  • It does not verify a licence. The registry stores the licence number a provider entered; whether it is active, restricted or revoked is held by the state licensing board.
  • It does not decide who is excluded. We match the OIG list by NPI only, never by name, and most entries on that list carry no NPI. The OIG's own search is the official record for any employment or credentialing decision.
  • It does not track you. No accounts, no analytics, no advertising cookies. See the privacy policy.

Corrections and contact

We cannot change a federal record. If your NPPES entry, your Medicare figures or a hospital's Care Compare results are wrong at the source, the provider or the agency corrects them there and the change reaches this site at the next refresh (the schedule is on the sources page). If a page here misrepresents what the federal file actually says - a wrong join, a mislabelled measure, a stale figure after a refresh - that is our error and we will fix it.

How to reach us, and where to go instead for questions about a specific record or your own care, is on the contact page. We answer questions about the site, corrections and privacy requests; we do not answer medical questions.
